PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana is the Government of India's flagship rooftop solar scheme, launched to help one crore households generate their own electricity. For Gujarat homeowners it is the single biggest reason rooftop solar has become affordable in the last two years.
The subsidy structure is straightforward: ₹30,000 per kW for the first two kilowatts, ₹18,000 for the third kilowatt, and a hard cap of ₹78,000 for any system of 3 kW or more. Group housing societies receive ₹18,000 per kW for common facility plants up to 500 kW.
Eligibility is simple. You must be an Indian citizen, own a house with a suitable roof, hold a valid domestic electricity connection in your name, and not have claimed a rooftop subsidy before. Tenants cannot apply against a landlord's connection.
Keep four things ready before you register: your latest electricity bill, Aadhaar, a cancelled cheque or bank passbook copy, and proof of ownership of the premises. Registration is done on the National Portal, after which your DISCOM issues technical feasibility approval.
Installation must be carried out by a vendor registered on the portal. Once the plant is commissioned and the net meter is installed, the DISCOM uploads the commissioning report and the subsidy is transferred directly to your bank account, usually within 30 to 45 days.
